The control room/cabina di regia for the period January 4 – 10 reports a general worsening of the epidemiological situation in the country. The increase in incidence was however contained, thanks to the mitigation measures adopted during the holiday period.
In particular, the high incidence value in the monitoring week in the Veneto Region (365.21 per 100,000 inhabitants), the Autonomous Province of Bolzano (320.82), Emilia Romagna (284.64), and Friuli Venezia Giulia (270.77) has come to the forefront. Incidence is still far from levels that would allow the complete restoration of case identification and contact tracing throughout the country. Health services have shown the first signs of critical issues when the value at national level exceeded 50 cases per 100,000 in seven days, and a criticality of service retention with high incidences.
The national transmission index is increasing for the fifth consecutive week and is above 1. Two Regions/PPAs (Bolzano and Lombardy) show a punctual Rt greater than 1.25, even in the lower limit, thus compatible with a type 3 scenario; 9 regions (Abruzzo, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Liguria, Piedmont, Apulia, Sicily, Umbria, and Aosta Valley) have a punctual Rt greater than 1 in the lower limit, compatible with a type 2 scenario. The remaining 10 regions have an Rt compatible with a type one scenario, however, all of them except one have an average Rt above 1 or just below.
The epidemic remains at a delicate stage and a new rapid increase in the number of cases in the coming weeks is possible if mitigation measures are not strictly maintained at both national and regional level. This national trend implies strong inter-regional variations, with some regions where the absolute number of hospitalisations in critical areas and their impact, together with a high incidence, impose strong restrictive measures.
